Explaining his ideas

Our ‘Two-day Pronunciation Fundamentals Workshop’ takes place over two full days (two consecutive Saturdays from 9.00 am – 5.30 pm) at a venue in central Singapore.

The workshop’s objective is to teach you the fundamental principles of English pronunciation and provide a solid foundation for your future pronunciation training.

We will delve into the following topics:

  • Using the International Phonetic Alphabet for Pronunciation.
  • Vowel, Diphthong and Consonant Production.
  • The Power of Schwa: Word and Sentence Stress.
  • Connected Speech and Linking Sounds.
  • Features of Natural Intonation.
  • Organizing information and chunking.
Over the two days, you will apply your knowledge to a core text. After making an initial recording of the core text before the workshop commences, we will break it down together and show you how to use the features of fluent speech to enhance your delivery of the text. You will make a final recording of the text at the end of the workshop, showing you your progress in a few short days! You will receive detailed feedback on your final recording.

There is a small amount of pre-study work to be completed independently. We ask you to try to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols before the workshop using our free interactive online flashcards. This preparation will help you get a flying start with the course materials and should only take 30 minutes or so a day for seven days before the course starts.

Please note: As we will conduct the workshop in English, we require students to have a B2 (or equivalent) level of English.

Discussing task

For those who want to build on their pronunciation skills and form a regular practice, you can do so through weekly group coaching classes in central Singapore.

Mastery of natural English pronunciation takes patience and perseverance but by building a weekly practice, you will become increasingly aware of the features of natural fluent English speech. This will not only help with your own pronunciation, but it will also allow you to recognise these features in the speech of others, in turn improving your listening and comprehension skills.

The classes are structured in eight-week blocks to foster a consistent and supportive group environment.

Each eight-week block will centre around a core project text, either a speech, presentation, poem, script, article or passage. You will make a ‘before’ recording at the beginning of each eight-week block and an ‘after’ recording at the end of each eight-week block,  allowing you a clear picture of your progress and improvements.

During these weekly classes, we will go deeper into fluent and natural speech features. Using the core text, you will build your mastery of the following topics:

  • Using the International Phonetic Alphabet for Pronunciation.
  • Vowel, Diphthong and Consonant Production.
  • Consonant Clusters.
  • The Power of Schwa: Word and Sentence Stress.
  • Connected Speech and Linking Sounds.
  • Features of Natural Intonation.
  • Organizing Information and Chunking.
  • Contracted Forms, Ellipsis and Assimilation.

Please note: As we will conduct the classes in English, we require students to have a B2 (or equivalent) level of English.

About Our Founder and Lead Trainer

Mary Lamb BA (Hons), CGP.

Mary is from the UK and has long been fascinated by the English language. She received her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Durham in the UK (a World Top 100 university). Shortly afterwards, she began her teaching journey when she moved to Japan to teach English as part of the Japanese Government’s prestigious ‘Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme’.

After spending three years teaching English in Japan, Mary returned to the UK and spent the next decade working in corporate governance and board support roles in London.  During this time she qualified as a Chartered Governance Professional (CGP) with The Chartered Governance Institute (CGI). As such, Mary has a broad range of experience working with senior executives and directors in both private and public companies across a broad range of industries.

In 2018, following a move to Singapore, Mary decided to combine her love of teaching the English language with her corporate experience and background, by helping non-native English speaking students and professionals to communicate in English with confidence. In fact, she has worked with clients from all over the world including Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Isreal, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Recognising the specific need of her clients for a structured methodology to help them improve their pronunciation of English sounds, Mary qualified as a Compton Pronouncing English as a Second Language (PESL) certified instructor. Soon afterwards, she founded Accentutor to help her clients to meet this need.
